DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM
The main benefit of this system is that it delivers water right to the spot where the crop is planted. In addition, the amount of water delivered can be tightly controlled to keep the soil at the ideal level of moisture, necessary to maximize growth in the plant. As the crop is planted at specific locations next to the emitters, urea, fertilizers and pesticides need also only be applied directly to the root area of the crop, ensuring major input cost savings. Water savings as stated before are expected to be ~50-75%, and other input costs are reduced by ~30-60%, while potentially increasing product yield by ~10-50%.
The MD drip irrigation system has 4 major components; the Water Tank, the Sub-main, the Laterals and the Emitters. |
The Water Tank
This contains the water that will feed the irrigation system. It is kept at a height of at least 2 meters which enables the water to flow naturally, via gravity, into the system. |

The Sub-main
This is a flexible pipeline that is connected from the Water Tank to the laterals, with a control valve which allows for release of water.
The Laterals
These are long, soft pipes that are connected to the Sub-main in parallel rows along the crops. The water flows from the Sub-main through the Laterals to the Emitters. |

The Emitters
The final components of the system, the Emitters, are connected directly to the Laterals, from where the water exits the system. This is the most important function of the system as the water drops directly over the plant’s root area –in equal, measured amounts- allowing crop growth to be equal throughout the drip irrigated plot.
Due to the simplicity of the system, there is minimal risk of breakdown. However, in the rare event that the system should experience problems, the technology is simple enough that a farmer with no prior technical knowledge will be able to make repairs without assistance. |
