The markets being targeted by Micro Drip are in the Thar region of Sindh. After achieving targets in Tharparkar and Umerkot, MD will be expanding to Dadu and other parts of Sindh, all the while focusing on the lower-income and small land-holding farmers in these areas. MD eventually plans to extend its operations throughout rural Pakistan, leveraging the existing Rural Support Programme (RSP) network, which spans some 1.5 million household and geographically covers the entire country.
Rain is the main source of water in Tharparkar and the farmers in this region are virtually entirely dependent on rainwater. This is due to the barriers faced in water extraction and a general unavailability of water in the region. However, such dependence on rain generally limits the options available to farmers of the region, as Thar receives only about 0-300 mm of rain annually. The monsoon season starts in the middle of July, and may last until the middle of September in most years, with a frequency of three to four showers. Since all agriculture and livestock activities are dependent on this rainfall, the lack of a monsoon season would completely prohibit the production of agricultural crop as well as fodder for the Thari livestock. Lack of rainfall has previously led to severe shortages of food and water in the region. People of Thar begin their agricultural activities by the middle of May by preparing land for cultivation. The season usually ends with the harvest in November.
In some cases, farming in the off-season may occur if farmers have access to ground or canal water. However, even in these rare cases, farmers are not able to fully utilize their land due to the limited amount of water available to them. This will be the initial market targeted by MD, because it can help farmers better utilize their limited water.
Whatever the source, drip irrigation will allow farmers to better control their water resources year around, and farm their land throughout the year. Drip irrigation could potentially increase the income of a farmer by 2 to 3 times. |
